Affirmative Action

Back To Glossary

Affirmative Action Meaning

Affirmative Action refers to policies or practices that increase opportunities for historically marginalized groups. This is especially true in fields such as employment, education, and business. Affirmative action aims to combat past and current discrimination and promote diversity and inclusion.

In practice, affirmative action may include considering race, gender, or other characteristics when making decisions about hiring, admission to college, or government contracts to create an even playing field. Affirmative action is a controversial concept, with some arguing it rectifies historical injustices while others claim it can lead to reverse discrimination or unfair benefits.

The legal status and specific implementation of affirmative action can vary greatly depending on the country.

When Did Affirmative Action Start?

In the United States, affirmative action started in the 1960s with Executive Order 10925 of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. This required government contractors not to discriminate in their hiring practices. Under President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Civil Rights Act of 1984 and subsequent executive order expanded this policy.

When Did Affirmative Action End?

The scope of affirmative action has been significantly reduced, but it hasn’t been eliminated. The United States Supreme Court’s June 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard effectively ended affirmative action based on race in college admissions.

Why is Affirmative Action Important?

Affirmative Action is important because it seeks to correct systemic and historical inequalities that marginalized groups face. By promoting diversity in employment, education, and other areas, affirmative action creates opportunities for people who were historically underrepresented or excluded.

This also helps to create a more equal society, as talent and potential are recognized by all groups of people, not just those who traditionally hold power or privilege. Diverse environments can also enhance creativity, understanding, and innovation in educational institutions and workplaces.
